An ultrasound is a safe imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves instead of radiation. It is used in the following circumstances:

1. In addition to a mammogram to assess dense breasts
2. First-line imaging in young women who are under 40
3. In diagnostic and localisation procedures (see Specialised Procedures)
