Breast ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of your breast. It’s often used alongside a mammogram, or as the first test for younger women, during pregnancy, or when something specific needs a closer look and complement the mammogram.
What to expect
- A small probe is moved gently over the breast and armpit.
- Most exams take 10-15 minutes.
- You can go home immediately afterwards.
Quick facts
- Ultrasound is safe – also during pregnancy and when breastfeeding.
- It doesn’t replace mammograms, but works alongside them.
- It’s especially helpful for dense breasts.
